'Leopard': The Advanced Technology Chair

Very impressive!

That's my first word while reading to Tech On news letter. Why not? They putting "Oki Turns Robot Leg into Office Chair" as the title!

Oki Electric Industry Co Ltd and Okamura Corp has team up together to developed a concept model of an office chair that employs robot technologies. These new advanced chair used Oki's leg-shaped robot as the base of the chair, and they name it as "Leopard".

Looking to the chair it self, seem like no any significant different to compare to other models in the market. Some friend of mine said,"... there's many other chair out there may look more sophisticated!". But, let's look a bit closer to this 'Leopard' before we turn off our face.

Oki developed the Robot Leg technology and presented at an academic conference in 2005, but this is the first time that the technology has been employed in a commercial product.

The Robot Leg is mounted with springs and driving units such as motors, but to design these kind of chair they change the motor with mechanical hydraulic cylinders.

The thigh area of the Robot Leg corresponds to the seating surface of the chair. The seating surface is tilted forward when it is empty. By then, when it is occupied, it significantly sinks and, at the same time, the seat back moves to the position where it fits the occupant's back, providing "seating comfort akin to being held in someone's arms". So on when the occupant stands up, the seating surface follows the movement of the occupant, helping the occupant to stand up.

Oki and Okamura will continue the development, aiming to release the product in May 2009. Their major challanges for mass production is the material they using now. Carbon fiber reinforced resin, which provides strength and light weight at the same time may reconcidered as to ensure the price are affordable to market.

Rather they will succeed with the new office innovation? Just wait until we can test the product later by 1st Q next year. And, "I would like to see how 'Leopard' will make us feel more enjoying our office hour..."
